I was recently contacted by the people from Boohoo.com and asked if I wanted to take part in this warbdrobe game for bloggers and despite the fact that I leave for my trip in 3 days (!!!) I agreed and managed to find the time to put together my entry.
I know a lot of you already know who I am and what I do, but part of the game is to introduce myself and talk about where I take my style inspiration from etc for anyone who might find themselves here through Boohoo. So here goes.
My name is Mary, but I tend to go by Mary Kate online. I'm 22 and I live in Sydney, Australia. I generally class myself as a writer - I write here on my blog and I'm also an Editor over at www.fashionglobalblog.com where I also contribute articles (I'll be publishing a series of posts from Europe there soon, so keep an eye out!)
I like reading. Enid Blyton and JK Rowling narrated my childhood and Douglas Adams, Phillip Pullman, Markus Zusak, Susanne Collins, Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Marsden have all contributed to my adulthood. I also like pretty perfume bottles, pancakes, sleeping in all day, my boyfriend, instagram, French movies, catching people singing while driving alone in their cars and wifi connection.
I don't hate much. Except pumpkin, slow drivers, bad cell phone reception and running out of Nutella.
I'm going to be honest though and say that I did not always love fashion. I'm sure plenty of girls who knew me in high school would (gladly) attest to that. I try to forget about the number of overly-flared jeans that I had hanging in my wardrobe. I find solace in the fact that all of us have some fashion faux pas we wish we could take back (how many of you collected scrunchies?!)
In fact it was an addiction to Tumblr (grown from a need to procrastinate the HSC and the mountain of study notes I hadn't yet written) that fuelled my desire to spend all my money on clothes I couldn't afford. If I ever have to give a speech of thanks there'll be a few Tumblr users who should rightly be given honourable mentions.
My style isn't something that grew naturally over time or that came from some beloved fashion role model. I simply began taking an interest in Australian designers (Alice McCall, AJE, Shakuhachi, Manning Cartell) and how certain body shapes could be complimented by particular cuts and patterns and actually started putting thought into my wardrobe choices. I definitely take inspiration from trends, but ultimately I like to wear what I feel comfortable in, since I'm not leading some glamorous, Devil Wears Prada-esque lifestyle where wearing sky high Christian Louboutin's to work everyday is necessary. Besides, I certainly don't have the money to live that way and I'm pretty sure the average 22 year old girl doesn't either. If you do, you're welcome to come share some of that luck with me! I'll pay you in love and novels?
Anyway, here are the rules of the game.
- There are four categories - Tops, Bottoms, Shoes and Accessories
- I choose five pieces from each, number them and then randomly choose one from each category
- I shoot the final outfit
There's not much I would change to be honest. At first I wasn't sure about the shoes, but with the red bracelet, red lipstick and red beading on the shirt they seemed to help complete a colour scheme, which was a happy accident. This is definitely not an outfit that I would have put together of my own initiative so I'm glad it worked out so well!
Thanks Boohoo for the opportunity to play!
